Statement to GSOC Membership
Our resounding YES to BDS is making history! 66% of voting GSOC members approved the call for divestment and the closure of NYU Tel Aviv, and 57% pledged to support academic boycott of Israeli institutions. Our membership has decisively asserted that we are unwilling to financially support oppression in Palestine any longer. We have taken a stand for justice and equality for all who live in Palestine-Israel.
We are proud to be members in a union that takes stands on the crucial political issues of our time. As students and workers at NYU, we urge our university to adhere to our demand to divest from the Israeli occupation and to close its satellite campus in Tel Aviv. As workers and union members, we call on UAW to heed the call of three of its graduate student worker organizations (UAW 2865, GEO-UAW 2322 and GSOC-UAW 2110), and divest from the Israeli occupation.
In the days, weeks, and months moving forward, we will undoubtedly face pushback from those who would like to maintain the status quo. Less than a week after the referendum, President Hamilton circulated an inaccurate and inflammatory statement about our union’s democratic decision. You can read our response here.
This is only the beginning. We will continue to fight for justice in Palestine, and continue solidarities with other anti-racist,anti-colonial and social justice movements globally.
Onward!
